SPX'S EDWARDS SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY UNIT ACQUIRES ENGELHARD SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES

contemporary CHESHIRE, CT - March 20, 2000 - Edwards Systems Technology (EST), a unit of SPX Corporation, today announced that it has acquired the assets of Engelhard Sensor Technologies from Engelhard Corp. It will become a division of EST and will be called Telaire.

Located in Goleta, California, Engelhard Sensor Technologies is best known for providing cost effective CO2 sensors that control ventilation in buildings based on occupancy. Under the Telaire brand name, it manufactures portable and wall mounted infrared sensors that can measure carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and water vapor.

Jay Twombly, President of EST, said, "We have acquired a company that has discovered a significant breakthrough in the development of cost effective, infrared gas sensing technology. In addition to Telaire's existing market in ventilation control, we know that this new technology can greatly benefit our fire and life-safety products.
