We’re no longer just managing teams; we’re managing models that think, tools that talk, and platforms that want to connect.
I. USC Keeps on BIM BOP’in the Years Away
BIM BOP has been a steady signal in the industry noise since 2007, hosted by the USC School of Architecture and powered by the duo of Karen Kensek and Doug Noble. The name itself, “BOP” is Karen’s invention, a nod to her legendary timekeeping. Go over your allotted time, and she’ll give you a friendly “bop” to keep things moving.
That structure matters. It ensures we hear from every speaker, including the rapid-fire five-minute round at the end and gives the event its rhythm.
As a USC School of Architecture alum, it’s always a recharge to return. But here’s something most people don’t realize: BIM BOP doesn’t record sessions. If you want to learn, you have to show up. That’s the deal, and I did. This article exists to digest and reflect on what was shared, to keep the conversation going for those who missed it, and to give credit where it’s due.
This year? Karen may have had to BOP a few AI agents too. The mix of people, machines, and meaning made 2025 one of the most thought-provoking yet.
II. If Culture Eats Strategy, does AI Eat Culture?
Where API dreams meet office politics, and AI eats your broken workflows for lunch.
As someone who’s presented at several BIM BOPs over the years, I came into 2025 not just to observe, but to ask harder questions. My lens is shaped by decades working at the intersection of BIM, digital twins, IT (Information Technology) the systems that manage digital data, applications, and cloud services, and OT (Operational Technology), the systems that control physical building operations like HVAC, lighting, and security. And one question keeps surfacing:
How does what you do connect to the rest of the lifecycle, through automation, open standards, and two-way APIs? And if it doesn’t… what’s your plan?
We’ve all heard it before:
“It’s not the technology — it’s the people.”
But that framing is starting to unravel. Because the definition of “people” is changing.
We’re now mixing in machines that look like people. Tools that mimic expertise, generate specs, interpret standards, and even speak with empathy, until you realize they don’t actually care. They’re not emotional. They’re not political. They’re hungry. And your unstructured, fragmented, outdated data? That’s just a snack to them.
This is no longer just a tooling problem. It’s a cultural reckoning.
We’re not only navigating misaligned teams and office politics — we’re now negotiating blurred lines between human and machine agency. Between intent and automation. Between delegation and abdication.
Who gets to decide?
Who gets credit?
Who’s responsible?
AI doesn’t just accelerate workflows — it surfaces values.
And in an industry still optimized around hourly billing and “throw-it-over-the-wall” file drops, that’s deeply disruptive.
That’s why 2025 felt different. Not because of shinier tools, but because of the quiet, creeping realization that our workflows are no longer just digital — they’re semantic, social, and partially synthetic.
We’re not just designing buildings anymore.
We’re designing systems of intelligence.
III. The Wake-Up Call: No Slides from Nate!

Proving Ground
Nate Miller is known for dazzling visualizations and elegant toolchains, but not this year. No slides. No code. Just a quiet gut punch:
“Most firms don’t even have the baseline data assets to benefit from AI.”
He called it like it is: the fundamentals are broken. 90% of digital strategy efforts fail not because of the tech, but because of disorganized data, unclear goals, and lack of leadership.
Instead of showing off the latest tools, Nate introduced a different framework: smarts, health, and fitness — a diagnostic lens for organizations. If the data isn’t structured, if the leadership isn’t aligned, and if the business isn’t fit for change, AI will only accelerate the chaos.
This wasn’t a demo. It was a wake-up call.

Thesla asked the right questions:
If AI can generate specs in seconds, how do we measure value?
BIM managers can’t just be tool jockeys; they must become strategic leaders.
Her delivery cut through the noise, reflective, sharp, and deeply relevant. It resonated not just for its content, but for its tone.
As Karen put it after her talk:
“That was so poetic. I just loved it. It was like a poem of questions.”
A welcome reminder that even technical conversations need space for clarity, emotion, and thoughtfulness, especially when the topic is how we define value in a machine-augmented future.

Timon reminded us that change doesn’t stick through force. It sticks through structure, empathy, and repetition. His framework, listen, join, nudge, repeat, applies not just to organizations but to how we adopt technology itself.
So people need this, does AI?
IV. Making BIM Smarter, When Architects Become Engineers of Intelligence

Brent opened BIM BOP with a clear message: architects shouldn’t just consume tools, they should make them. Speaking from inside an architectural firm, not a vendor, he showcased a live ecosystem of internally developed platforms and APIs designed to bridge design, operations, and data intelligence.
“We need systems that talk to each other, and evolve with us.”
It was refreshing to see a firm take ownership of its tech stack, showing that intelligent workflows don’t always come from the outside. This was architecture behaving like a software company, and it worked.

Jens Majdal Kaarsholm introduced what might be the most forward-looking platform at BIM BOP — Motif, a cloud-native, AI-augmented design environment that reframes what BIM could be.
He called it “Building Intelligence Modeling”, not just a play on the acronym, but a fundamental shift. Rather than layering tools on legacy CAD/BIM infrastructure, Motif starts with a real-time, browser-based canvas — more Miro than Revit — where teams can attach geometry, data, and AI-generated content in fluid, collaborative space.
This isn’t just digital design; it’s semantic, open, and composable. Users can stream in models from Rhino or Revit, interact with them in a shared visual workspace, and deploy agents to generate design options or suggest changes. It’s part BIM, part systems-thinking, and part infinite whiteboard.
Motif doesn’t just promise interoperability, it makes it feel native.

Ingrid showcased DECA, an internal AI/ML tool that estimates operational energy and carbon for any building type worldwide. It’s a leap from static benchmarks toward fluid intelligence. When asked if DECA would be accessible externally via API or client integration, she acknowledged there’s no current roadmap, but expressed personal interest in broader access. “It’s not my decision,” she said — signaling internal alignment may still be evolving.

Daniel demonstrated intelligent automation in the design-to-manufacturing space. His startup is building an integrated process for panelized housing using Rhino.Inside.Revit and the Revit API to automate FIM (fabrication information modeling) of MEP-integrated wall panels.

Sam showed how structural analysis can feed live design feedback through Grasshopper. On a recent stadium project, his team used in-house tools like Lattice to connect architectural models with analysis software — enabling real-time collaboration between disciplines.
Shaobo Yang made solar logic a design driver. Parametric facades tuned to minimize heat while optimizing light. Climate data becomes form, not constraint.
V. Escaping File-Based Thinking

Clive didn’t hold back:
“90% of our AEC data is unstructured — and 96% of it goes unused.”
He called out the AEC industry’s chronic dysfunction: a confrontational culture, bloated Word-based BIM Execution Plans, and endless file-based exchanges masquerading as collaboration. “We still throw things over the wall,” he said — not out of malice, but because the system is built that way.
But the tide is turning. With international standards like ISO 19650, frameworks like IDS, and the emergence of AI-powered tagging, Clive showed how we now have the scaffolding for verifiable, structured, and shareable BIM. His live demo in Plannerly showed AI auto-generating requirements, checking compliance, and streamlining what used to be spreadsheet hell.

And crucially — when asked — Clive confirmed that Plannerly has an API. That opens the door for interoperability with external AI agents, automation tools, and other platforms.
BIM + Standards + AI + API = the opportunity to break the cycle.
Conor Schafer (Thornton Tomasetti) gave us the bridge: Grasshopper as an interop engine. His key point? We shouldn’t need translators at all. AI will do that. And soon, software like CORE Studio’s Asterisk 2.0 will collapse the stack.

Scott delivered a shocker: backward compatibility in Revit through the Autodesk Data Exchange. Not full file-based sharing, but part-based data streams. Finally.

Hailong showed progress using Conveyor for design-to-fabrication, and live interaction with the audience through a web interface.

In a sea of polished tools, Steve gave us raw process. He showed how he uses Zoom whiteboards to structure and visualize collaborative problem-solving — from Rhino to AI experiments. Less product, more thinking.
“I use whiteboards not just to capture answers, but to guide questions — especially when working with students and teams.”

Shobhit argued that LiDAR and reality capture aren’t just add-ons — they’re the essential truth layer for BIM. He emphasized LOA (Level of Accuracy) over LOD, and advocated staying at LOA 40 for consistent reliability across phases.
“Reality capture is the best method for building trust in BIM. It’s where we begin the lifecycle with confidence.”

Ron made a case for fire-resilient, panelized, light-gauge steel framing — an IFC-driven pipeline from ArchiCAD or Revit to fabrication via FrameCAD. He stressed this isn’t theoretical: projects are going up in LA, Armenia, and beyond.
“We’re not just experimenting — we’re building. At $40K per unit, these are affordable, resilient, and repeatable.”

Jiayi zoomed out to city scale, presenting a vision for Common Data Environments (CDEs) as the backbone of smart urban twins. Her focus: not just data integration, but aligning it with real-world decision-making.
“A true CDE is not just about storage — it’s about connecting planning, infrastructure, and citizens with a shared source of truth.”
VI. What Was Missing: What Was Missing: The Owner’s Voice — and the Responsibility to Connect
For all the talk of AI, APIs, and automated workflows, one thing was glaring: owners weren’t really in the room. That’s not a knock on BIM BOP, it’s a reflection of our industry’s persistent blind spot.
Designers and builders don’t just deliver buildings, we embed data into the built environment. That data lives long after we leave, affecting energy, safety, operations, and cost. If we don’t connect it to the systems that owners rely on, if we ignore the operational technology (OT) layer, then we’re not delivering value, we’re delivering overhead.
That’s why initiatives like C4SB, the Linux Foundation, and the Asset Leadership Network matter. They’re not just creating frameworks, they’re connecting architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) to the networks owners actually use. That’s the leap from BIM to intelligence.
And hey, superstar BIM Boppers, meet the owners who want to BOP too.
They want in. They want interoperable data, feedback loops, and insights that go beyond punchlists. But it’s on us, the AECO community, to meet them halfway. To design not just deliverables, but durable, connective assets. The more we network our thinking, the more value we deliver downstream.
That’s the next chapter, and we’re already picking it up in Café Zai: a space for owner-led conversations on standards, resilience, semantics, and AI. Because if we’re serious about intelligence, we need to start with who it’s for, and who’s accountable when it fails.
VII. What Comes After Intelligence?
Intelligence is more than tech. It’s the sum of:
- Accessible, structured data
- Open, semantic frameworks
- Human decisions rooted in insight, not just intuition
This year, BIM BOP felt like a pivot point. Not because of a single tool or talk, but because of the undercurrent: a quiet realization that the old ways are out of time.
As I said at the start, I came to BIM BOP 2025 asking a tough question:
How does what you do connect to the rest of the lifecycle, through automation, open standards, and two-way APIs?
That question still stands!
