Hosted by Engenuity & Cimetrics • Sponsors of AutomatedBuildings
If you missed the recent webinar hosted by Engenuity Systems and Cimetrics, you missed a deep dive into one of the most significant shifts in building automation: BACnet Secure Connect (BACnet/SC).
But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.
In this session, industry experts Tracy Markie (Engenuity), Jim Lee, Jim Butler, and Charlie Peterson (Cimetrics) detailed why BACnet/SC represents more than just an incremental update—it’s a foundational shift enabling secure, IT-aligned system integration. industry experts
Why BACnet/SC Matters Now More Than Ever
Traditional BACnet/IP has served us well, but it’s showing its age:
- No built-in security—communications are unencrypted and unauthenticated.
- Relies on UDP broadcasts that don’t travel well across subnets.
- BBMDs add complexity and instability.
- It clashes with modern IT policies, especially zero-trust frameworks.
BACnet/SC fixes all of that. It uses TLS 1.3 encryption, eliminates broadcasts, works seamlessly across VLANs and WANs, and requires certificate-based authentication for every device. In short: it makes BACnet ready for the modern IT world.

How It Works & What It Means for Integrators
A BACnet/SC setup includes:
- Primary and failover hubs for resilient connectivity.
- Direct-Connect mode for secure device-to-device communication.
- Mandatory certificates for network access.
- Routing between SC, IP, and MSTP—critical for mixed-system facilities.
But it’s not without challenges. Integrators are facing:
- Certificate onboarding headaches (the #1 deployment issue).
- Immature vendor tools for diagnostics and management.
- Broadcast overload when bridging SC with legacy systems.
- The need for BACnet firewalls to protect secure segments.
Who’s Using BACnet/SC Today?
It’s already in action in high-stakes environments:
- International airports
- Ivy League universities
- Hospital systems & pharmaceutical facilities
- Government and military sites
Cimetrics is even working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to validate multi-vendor interoperability for federal projects.
Tools to Make SC Deployment Smoother
Cimetrics showcased several tools designed to help integrators succeed:
- SPC Appliance – A high-capacity hub with built-in certificate authority and full diagnostics.
- SPC 3100 – A BACnet firewall and router for network segmentation.
- SPC 3200 – Bridges legacy MSTP into secure SC networks.
These tools help manage migration, maintain security, and ensure stability at scale.
Key Takeaways
- BACnet/SC is essential for large, secure, IT-managed buildings.
- Certificates and routing are now core skills for integrators.
- Long-term certificate management is a new responsibility.
- Future enhancements will bring Active Directory-like authentication, enabling true zero-trust building networks.
