
Although I am not a native-born American, I chose to study American history to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States this Fourth of July. For me, this is not only a historical reflection. It is also part of an educational journey. In the era of Artificial Intelligence, we have new tools that allow us to research more deeply, compare perspectives, organize knowledge, and connect historical lessons to our professional lives.
One of the most powerful examples of persistence in American history is Abraham Lincoln.
Before Lincoln became president, his life was shaped by hardship. He grew up in poverty on the frontier. He experienced personal loss, business failure, political defeat, bereavement, and periods of deep emotional struggle. His early life does not read like a smooth path toward success. It reads like a long record of setbacks.
Yet Lincoln continued.
That is where the lesson begins for us as controls technicians.
In building automation and HVAC controls, failure is not unusual. A commissioning test may fail. A BACnet device may not discover. A VFD may not respond to command. A sensor may read incorrectly. A valve may be commanded open but fail to prove flow. A sequence may look correct in the submittal but behave differently once connected to real equipment.
These failures can be frustrating, but they are also valuable. A failed commissioning attempt is not simply a verdict. It is data. It tells us where the system, the wiring, the logic, the network, the mechanical equipment, or our own assumptions need to be examined more carefully.
Lincoln’s presidency showed this same pattern on a much larger scale. He led during the American Civil War, preserved the Union through crisis, and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which changed the moral direction of the war. His leadership was not built on the absence of hardship. It was built through persistence, adjustment, and purpose under pressure.
Controls work requires a similar discipline, even though the scale is different. We do not always receive a perfect roadmap. Field conditions often reveal what drawings, sequences, and assumptions miss. A strong technician learns to slow down, verify, document, and keep moving toward root cause.
That means we must resist the habit of relying only on workarounds. A workaround may temporarily get equipment running, but it does not always create understanding. The deeper value comes from documenting what failed, what was expected, what actually happened, what was verified, and what corrected the issue.
This is how technical knowledge becomes transferable. One technician’s difficult troubleshooting experience can become another technician’s future advantage.
Lincoln’s legacy includes the Gettysburg Address, the preservation of the Union, the abolition of slavery, and his enduring place in American history after his assassination near the end of the war. But his broader lesson is not only political or historical. It is human. He did not allow repeated setbacks to become his identity.
That lesson matters in our trade.
A failed startup does not mean we are failures. A missed assumption does not mean we are not capable. A difficult commissioning day does not define our career. These moments are part of the learning process when we approach them with honesty, discipline, and persistence.
For controls technicians, the practical habits are clear:
Treat failed commissioning as learning data.
Document root causes instead of relying on temporary workarounds.
Use AI and digital tools to organize lessons, but keep human judgment at the center.
Share lessons with the team so one person’s setback becomes shared knowledge.
Separate setbacks from personal identity.
The future of facilities management and building automation will depend not only on smarter systems, better software, and more advanced AI tools. It will also depend on technicians who are willing to learn deeply, document clearly, and persist through difficulty.
Failure is not the opposite of success.
When handled correctly, failure becomes part of the path toward mastery.
