Promising, Proven, Proven at Scale

Promising, proven, and proven at scale are not the same thing.

That distinction matters more in building automation.

New technologies are moving quickly into real buildings, particularly around AI, interoperability, cloud platforms, and energy management. Some are already delivering measurable value. Others are still being tested, refined, or proven in particular applications.

We think the industry should be clearer about which is which.

A successful pilot tells us something useful. It does not necessarily tell us what happens across a portfolio of buildings.

A system may be technically interoperable, but the more interesting question is how well it performs in a real multi-vendor environment.

An AI tool may generate useful recommendations, but that is different from giving it responsibility for operational decisions. It’s a question AB Research asked directly in Who Teaches AI What a Building Means?

The issue is not whether these emerging technologies should be given room to develop. They should.

The more useful question is, what evidence supports the claim being made?

At AutomatedBuildings, we want to hear more about what happened after deployment: what worked, what was measured, what changed, and what the project team learned along the way.

That includes successful projects, but also the adjustments and limitations that rarely make it into the headline.

Over the coming months, the Editorial Board will be looking more closely at this distinction between promise and proof.

If you have a project or experience that adds something useful to that conversation, we would like to hear from you.

Proof Over Promise · AHR Expo 2027

Stay tuned. That same test, promising, proven, or proven at scale, is the one we’ll be applying to the AHR Expo 2027 education program. Eighteen sessions, three days, one standard. We’ll be bringing the full lineup into view in the weeks ahead.
