Contemporary Controls is a leading manufacturer of unique and innovative products for the industrial and building automation industries leveraging technologies such as BACnet, Cellular, Ethernet, IoT and Modbus.

ccontrolFor those installations that require expanding the number of I/O points in the field, cost-effective configurable I/O modules are now available with analog and digital inputs and outputs in varying combinations. The configurable I/O modules support two of the most popular communication protocols: Modbus (ASCII, RTU, TCP/IP) and BACnet (MS/TP, IP). By providing support for these open communication standards, configurable I/O modules provide solutions to both new and existing Building Management Systems (BMS). Modbus or BACnet operation is easily selectable with a dipswitch.

The configurable I/O modules provide universal inputs that support temperature, analog, resistance and binary in a single module. For applications not requiring universal inputs, modules with discrete inputs that support contact closure and retentive pulse counting at 100 Hz are available. Additional modules supply a mix of universal inputs and/or discrete with relay outputs and analog outputs.

bb3The Babel Buster BB3-7101 Modbus to BACnet IP gateway allows Modbus devices to communicate with BACnet IP devices. BACnet objects may be read as Modbus registers, and Modbus registers may be read as BACnet objects. The Modbus to BACnet IP gateway acts as a translator between the two protocols.

The Modbus to BACnet IP gateway may be both Modbus TCP client and server at the same time, and can be configured to also be a Modbus RTU master or slave that runs independently of Modbus TCP. The BB3-7101 will continuously poll Modbus registers in TCP or RTU devices and make that data accessible as BACnet objects. Configured to go the other way, the BB3-7101 will continuously poll objects in other BACnet devices and make that data accessible as Modbus registers for other Modbus masters polling the BB3-7101.

In the context of smart buildings, operational technology (OT) consists of elevators, lighting, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), power meters, surveillance, access control, intercoms and fire alarms—essentially anything bolted to the building. As these devices become more networked with IP, it is possible for IT and facilities to collaborate to create impressive smart buildings. This month, Cochrane Supply is pleased to spotlight products to do just that.
