Canadian Consulting Engineer - The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is proposing a new BACnet standard for combining elevator controls and building systems.

Reliable Controls The proposal to expand ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 1135-2004, "BACnet: A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks" was reviewed at ASHRAE's winter meeting and is now being drafted by elevator expert Dr. Albert So.

The proposal would expand BACNet's coverage of building systems for HVAC, Fire life-safety, lighting and security. Elevators include lifts (vertical or near vertical transport) and escalators (horizontal or near horizontal transport).

BACnet is an electronic protocol for enabling different building systems and controls to be able to communicate with each other.
