The New Beckhoff BK1120 – Complete EtherCAT Support for I/O Systems

Bus Coupler establishes EtherCAT compatibility for entire Beckhoff Bus Terminal I/O product line

MINNEAPOLIS, November 29, 2006 – Companies can now integrate any of the 200+ distributed I/O from Beckhoff Automation’s KL family into ultra high speed EtherCAT systems via the new BK1120 Bus Coupler. The BK1120 provides a clear path for next generation industrial Ethernet implementation while offering complete backwards compatibility with existing Beckhoff I/O systems. Separate nodes of traditional KL I/O terminals and ultra high speed EL I/O terminals with built-in EtherCAT communication can now be networked together for even greater flexibility.

The BK1120 is particularly suitable for highly distributed applications since it is possible to extend Ethernet cable lengths up to 100 m between individual nodes. Because of high transmission speed and synchronicity, EtherCAT enables industry-leading I/O processing time and control capabilities. EtherCAT sets new standards where conventional fieldbus systems reach their limits. Communication to 1,000 distributed I/Os in 30 µs, almost unlimited network size and optimum vertical integration is assured.

With EtherCAT, the costly star wiring topology can be replaced with a simple line or tree structure – no proprietary infrastructure components are required. All types of Ethernet devices can be quickly and easily integrated via a switch or switch port. Highly cost-effective standard Cat 5e or fiber optic cabling can be used for EtherCAT system wiring.

Bus Terminal I/O from the company is also compatible with all major industrial fieldbus networks including DeviceNet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, Ethernet TCP/IP, SERCOS, ControlNet, CANopen and several others.
