Advanced ASHRAE Energy Guides Will Assist LEED Designers

ATLANTA - Designers will be better able to develop sustainable, high-performance buildings through use of advanced energy design guides from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The guides also will help them in achieving LEED certification for sustainable building design. Proposed documents providing 30 and 50 percent energy savings over ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, are being developed by the Society. Future plans include the development of guidance to achieve 75 percent savings. The savings refer to reductions in energy consumption beyond that allowed by 90.1, which sets the minimum energy efficiency required by most building codes. The savings will help designers achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, offered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), with which ASHRAE has a partnership agreement.

ASHRAE Journal Article - Too Hot, Too Cold: Diagnosing Occupant Complaints

ATLANTA - One employee constantly complains about your office being too hot, while another argues that it is too cold. How do you figure out which one, if either, is right? Through evaluation, review and analysis. A checklist that can be used in this process is featured in an article in the January issue of ASHRAE Journal, published by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).  Article can be purchased via the online bookstore at ASHRAE.org. The cost is $8. The article is available for free to ASHRAE members.

ASHRAE Publishes Reference Guide on Sustainable Design

ATLANTA - The need for green building design is well documented. So are the advantages. But guidance on how to practice green building design has not been readily available. The ASHRAE GreenGuide, published by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, fills that void. The book serves as a reference manual for HVAC&R designers, providing them with guidance on green design from project design through construction, operation and maintenance to demolition. The book addresses architectural design impacts, conceptual engineering design, space thermal/comfort delivery systems, energy distribution systems, energy conservation systems, energy/water sources, lighting systems, plumbing and fire protection systems and controls. The guide features 29 ASHRAE GreenTips, which are sidebars containing information on techniques, processes, measures or systems. The tips contain a list of other sources for reference.
