Securing Buildings News

With Gigabit Ethernet, ETHERNET Powerlink enables automation systems to reach ten times the hitherto level of performance.

An extremely high degree of modularization with a large number of distributed drives as well as completely integrated safety engineering with full synchronisation are the demands of tomorrow’s high-performance systems.

By moving to tenfold performance with Gigabit Ethernet, ETHERNET Powerlink is set to meet the most challenging future requirements and offers investment security for years to come. Gigabit Powerlink represents an evolution in Real-Time Ethernet.

Unlike other Ethernet-based systems, the transition to Gigabit Ethernet is easy for Powerlink. Conforming completely to standards and based solely on software, there is no need to waste time or money on developing new Ethernet ASICs.

It is here that ETHERNET Powerlink demonstrates its strength. Since it conforms to standards, new developments can be incorporated quickly and easily. All that is needed are small modifications to the hardware platform and a better cable (Cat6). The ETHERNET Powerlink software remains the same and is 100% downwards compatible.

Future safe and economically sound, ETHERNET Powerlink sets the standard and is once again a decisive step ahead.

ETHERNET Powerlink (EPL) is the only market established real-time Ethernet protocol with micro-second accuracy. It is based exclusively on international standards and there are over 150,000 EPL nodes in use in 25,000 production machines around the world. More than 400 facilitators, suppliers and users have implemented ETHERNET Powerlink and over 200 mechanical engineers have completed ETHERNET Powerlink projects.

ETHERNET Powerlink is developed and published by the EPSG (ETHERNET Powerlink Standardization Group), an open organization of users of the automation technology, manufacturers and research institutes. Powerlink offers an open standard for distributed automation solutions based on the Ethernet and CANopen profiles with accurate real-time response in the micro-second range, high availability and safety mechanisms. EPSG members include, amongst others, ABB Robotics, Alstom, Altera, Baldor, B&R, Eckelmann, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, Hirschmann, infoteam Software, innotec, IXXAT, KW Software, KUKA, KW Software, Lenze, Pepperl + Fuchs, port, SEW Eurodrive and Tetra Pak.
