Business Intelligence Applications for Smart Buildings

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the industry I find myself in, and started thinking, “How did I get here?” And more importantly, “Why I chose to stay?”

It’s not like kids are waking up in the morning exclaiming, “I want to be a Smart Buildings Professional!” I was always intrigued by machines and wanted to know how and why they worked, so I became an Engineer.  Little did I know I would end up working with some of the most complex machines in the world, buildings.

I realize most people don’t choose the Smart Building industry; you just fall into it. I certainly did. I may not have chosen it, but I made the choice to stay. By doing so, I’ve found endless opportunities to learn, solve problems and grow personally and professionally.

Today, smart building technologies do much more than control the temperature. We’re improving the quality of our indoor environment, improving efficiency, and reducing risk. Buildings are consuming 40% of the overall energy in the United States and real estate owners spend billions of dollars each year to operate and maintain them.  Can we impact that? YES, we can!

Companies already use business intelligence tools from Microsoft, SAP or Salesforce to help operate a business. We now have Business Intelligence Applications to help run buildings.

Buildings and the people in them are one of the largest expenses any company can have on their P&L. I see the positive impact we can have on people, assets, and the environment which directly impacts the overall profitability of any business.

This is why I’m still here and why I’m not going anywhere.  Using technology to create positive change is exciting to watch. It’s even more exciting to be a part of it and that’s what drives me.

Do you feel the same way?

What are you doing to drive the industry?
