Sacramento Facility to Save 91% of Lighting Energy with Integrated Wireless Lighting Controls and LED Fixtures

Mountain View, Calif. – April 24, 2012 – Daintree Networks, Inc., the leading provider of intelligent wireless lighting controls for commercial buildings, today announced a successful installation for the Sacramento facility of United Stationers Inc., a leading North American wholesale distributor of business products. With the help of Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), United Stationers installed an integrated intelligent lighting system consisting of Cree’s energy-saving LED fixtures and Daintree’s ControlScope wireless lighting controls solution in the location’s office and break room area. The result is over 91% expected savings.

“We’re thrilled with the results of this advanced lighting project. Not only are our associates pleased with their improved lighting and personal control, but we’re already saving substantial energy,” said Ted Pinnow, Maintenance Manager for United Stationers’ Sacramento facility. “The project came together quickly with painless installation, and I’ve been impressed by the seamless integration of Cree and Daintree Networks products.”

The project was undertaken as part of a research project through SMUD that examines the deep savings potential from combining office LED fixtures with advanced wireless controls. With the assistance of Collins Electrical Company, Inc., Central California’s premier electrical contracting firm, United Stationers replaced hundreds of fluorescent fixtures across the office with CreeŽ CR Series LED Troffers, reducing the number of fixtures and dramatically lowering maximum wattage while significantly improving light quality.

The solution uses integrated intelligent controls from Daintree Networks to save energy even further. Daintree’s Wireless Area Controller communicates wirelessly with the fixtures through an integrated adapter, and the facility has added occupancy and photocell sensors. Lighting settings, including occupancy, daylighting, scheduling and task tuning, are all managed over the Web through the ControlScope Manager software interface. Each occupant has also received a remote wireless dimmer, allowing them to set their light level according to personal preference.

“The United Stationers project is a perfect example of how integrating controls can dramatically improve the results of a comprehensive lighting retrofit,” said Dallas Buchanan, VP of Sales and Business Development, Daintree Networks. “Through our work with fixture manufacturers like Cree, we are making it simple for commercial offices to benefit from the combination of efficient fixtures and advanced wireless controls.”

United Stationers, which has an active sustainability program, has found that its associates are enthusiastic to save energy, even beyond expectations. During office operating hours, the Cree fixtures are set by ControlScope to automatically dim down to a permanent 35 percent light level, and many occupants prefer to dim them even further. The results have been dramatic, with over 91% expected lighting energy savings.

“We were thrilled to work with SMUD and Daintree Networks on this innovative project,” said Patrick O’Flaherty, Manager, Product Marketing, Cree. “The seamless combination of advanced LED and standards-based wireless controls provides tremendous value to customers, both in energy savings and in improved occupant comfort.”
