Proper Lighting Control Pivotal to Achieving Choice Sustainability Certification

WHO:      OSRAM SYLVANIA Encelium, a manufacturer specializing in advanced lighting control and energy management systems for commercial and industrial buildings.

WHAT:      Has published a white paper, “Obtaining LEEDŽ Points with Addressable Dimming Controls,” geared to commercial building owners, managers, and engineers.

WHERE:      On its website, www.encelium.com / www.sylvania.com/controls

WHEN:      For immediate viewing

WHY:      Implementation of a proper control system for lighting is pivotal for a building to earn LEED certification, as energy performance is the largest driver of the points needed to qualify. It is also important to note that more accurate monitoring and control of energy-intensive systems like HVAC and lighting help keep energy costs in check. The use of addressable dimming lighting controls, in particular, can help a building achieve points toward LEED certification.

contemporary SIGNIFICANCE:  With today’s broad awareness that green buildings offer lower operating costs, increased value and improved ROI, the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEEDŽ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification has become the framework of choice for achieving sustainability at commercial properties. And lighting, which accounts for 30 percent of energy use in office buildings, often dominates the opportunity for energy savings among all electrical systems. Studies by Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s lighting team and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory show that advanced lighting controls, in conjunction with various energy management strategies, can typically yield a combined lighting energy savings of 40 to 80 percent in office buildings.
