Inviting Technology Innovators to Research

Hello AutomatedBuildings Readers I want to tell you about a well kept secret in the world of tech innovation.

Bridging the world of Industry and Research

Research is about scientific truths that can be proposed by anyone to solve any problem.

Research is published in peer reviewed journals and academic conferences with a rigor that expects a certain language, tone of communication with confidence mixed with respect to build upon the work of peers.

“Research is truly about standing on the shoulder of giants and getting ready to lend your shoulder for others to climb on to bring humanity forward. “

-Sudha Jamthe

I am attracted to research because of the opportunity to build on others’ work and others to build upon mine.

I am attracted to the limitlessness of the possibilities that you can publish research about.

I am attracted to the global researchers community and their passion to keep a rigor that sets the bar high.

The other side of this is that researchers talk a certain language and follow process in submitting, reviewing and accepting peer reviewed publications. They are a community and they know to spot their own. They compliment amazing work of their peers across competing companies and across the globe. They are tough on accepting new research which does not meet their high bar.

Researchers overlap with engineers and data scientists and data analysts because of the statistical rigor needed to prove a hypothesis of what you set out to research and prove. All researchers do not have to be statisticians.

In parallel to all this is the world of technology industry, our world here in Automated Buildings!

It has many brilliant minds like you loving Innovation and innovating to build products or improve process or solve customer problems.  Typically these innovators are not coders and you focus on the application level of AI or Applied AI.

You interact with engineers and data scientists but with a certain reverence of their math and coding knowledge, not always but from what I have seen. The engineers who are customer facing have an appreciation for the business acumen of the product and business managers.  But these innovative approaches are patented or kept as secret sauce by technology companies away from competition.

I come from this world from my corporate work experience and the students I teach at Barcelona Technology School and Stanford Continuing Studies. They are brilliant world changers.

I believe everyone involved in technology industry who has a role in building or influencing building of AI should publish research.

These innovators have magic to share with the world.  And they should stare it.

From my research work these are some areas of opportunities I am involved in and ripe for research as a business innovator. These are relevant to automated buildings. See my work on these topics to see how it is relevant to automated buildings and you can participate in it:

  1. Do you wonder if AI Ethics a Boon for innovation in industry?
  2. Do you want to find out how to benefit from Artificial Intelligence in every industry?
  3. A hot area on the collision of two futuristic technologies – Autonomous and autónomos vehicles and buildings
  4. Here’s a framework for identifying ethical repercussions of AI
  5. Get ready for a connected world. Citation: JAMTHE, SUDHA. “IoT Disruption 2020. Getting to the Connected World of 2020 with Deep Learning IoT.” UK: CreateSpace (2016)
  6. Inclusive ethical AI in human–computer interaction in autonomous vehicles (citation: S Jamthe, Y Viswanath, S Lokiah – Journal of AI, Robotics & Workplace Automation, 2022)
  7. Designing for Voice in Automated Buildings
  8. Complexity in Technology Transformation
  9. Collaboration in research
  10. Making Language AI Inclusive

To understand why making language AI should be inclusive for an innovative business, let me tell Introduce you to Global South in AI

Language is how we communicate with each other as people at home, at work and across regions and carry our learning across our business and cultures. AI has been learning language using Natural Language Processing (NLP) for knowledge management using documents as data in the enterprise. But if this language is not inclusive of 7100 languages of the world, we cannot bring the value to all our customers across all regions of the world.

Global South in AI is the newest affinity group of one of the top AI conferences NeurIPS 2022 happening in Dec 2022 in New Orleans, USA founded by Sudha Jamthe and Susanna Raj as a non profit community driven initiative to add inclusiveness in language AI by bringing new researchers on board with research abstracts and posters from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and indigenous languages from around the world for what is known as low resource languages.

An open call for abstracts was issued with double blind peer reviews from language AI experts as area chairs. New authors were invited to submit abstracts in three areas – model, datasets and voice. 12 Authors abstracts have been accepted by top reviewers (judges).

Congratulations to the Accepted abstracts at GlobalSouthinAI @NeurIPS2022

Below is the list of authors whose Language AI innovations have been accepted and invited to present a research poster at NeurIPS 2022, a top AI conference in New Orleans, USA in Dec 2022.

These accepted authors get to attend NeurIPS and present their posters in a live poster session on Nov 28th or in virtual posters presented on Dec 5th.  Join me in congratulating them and hope it inspires you to find new ways to add diversity to Language AI in your company, country and industry or city.
